The signer must appear in person or remotely via video/audio connection, before the Notary Public.
The Notary, is to positively identify the signer and be certain that the signer actually is who he or she claims to be and that the signer has the authority to sign the document. The identity of a document signer is established either through the Notary’s own personal knowledge of the signer, or through what is widely known as satisfactory evidence — satisfactory evidence being either an unexpired identification document (an ID card) or a credible identifying witness.
Signer is required to present unexpired identification at the time of notarization. Most commonly used identification documents are: Driver's License, Nondriver ID's, and passports.
The Notary will be certain not only of the document signer’s identity, but also of the person’s willingness to sign the document and the person’s awareness — the signer’s basic ability to understand what is happening and to act responsibly.
If the Notary suspects that someone is being forced or coerced into signing against his or her own will, the Notary will refuse to perform the notarization.
